Marquee de Sade
I've spent a few hours in the past weeks looking into how to implement an accessible, unobtrusive, progressive degrading scrolling ticker. Guess what ended up with? MARQUEE.
Yes, it's a proprietary Microsoft tag, it's not web standards compliant and it annoys the hell out of most users, but if you want a load of text to scroll across your page, it just works. As far as I'm aware all modern browsers support it, it degrades gracefully, doesn't require any javascript and is simple to implement. Any you know what? The latest specs for HTML 5 list it as a supported tag.
OK, I admit I loathe the thought of using it, but in this instance it just makes sense. I have a feeling once the novelty wears off for the client, they'll get annoyed by it too (or once they've had a few complaints). I've saved myself a whole load of time. In my mind, in these situations, the MARQUEE tag is not completely evil.
Next week, the BLINK tag.
